Dr. Koyu and His Role in Kargu Gamgi Movement

The movement, spearheaded by the visionary Dr. Tony Koyu, aims to promote, protect and preserve Donyipoloism faith practices of Galo community. Besides such movement has not only rejuvenated the Galo people’s rich cultural heritage and traditional belief systems but also revitalised its foundation with stronger and deeper roots that centered around worship to Donyipolo, the spirit of Sun Goddess and Moon God. Nevertheless, here Donyipolo means God only.

-Historical Context and Emergence of Kargu Gamgi-

Prior to the 20th century, the Galo community primarily relied on complex rituals performed by shamans (Nyijik Nyib) for spiritual guidance wherein animal and fowl sacrifices were very much prevalent and emphasised.

The Rise of Kargu Gamgi: A Catalyst for Change-

The emergence of the Kargu Gamgi movement in 2003 marked a significant turning point. Dr. Tony Koyu, a visionary leader and scholar, recognized the need to revitalize the Galo people’s spiritual connection to Donyipolo and preserve their cultural heritage. Through meticulous research and consultations with senior Galo priests (Jiktes), Dr. Koyu spearheaded the establishment of the movement.

The name “Kargu Gamgi” itself holds profound significance. “Kargu” draws upon the mythological concept of “Kargu Kardi,” a sacred space where deities assembled to address critical matters. “Gamgi” translates to “a place where God blesses and creates good fortune.” Thus, Kargu Gamgi signifies a designated space for fostering spiritual connection with Donyipolo, seeking blessings, and fostering communal well-being.
